Girls Weekend Out

For the first time in over six years, I took a vacation from my day/night/weekend/365 day a year job. My friend Nicole and I went on a weekend (actually 4 days and 3 nights) trip. We started our journey off by heading to Prague. We figured since it was only a 5 1/2 hour trip we could leave around 8:30 and have the late afternoon and evening to explore Prague. However, our GPS had a different plan. The 5 1/2 hour trip turned into a little over 8. So we pulled into Prague when it was already dark, this did allow us to see Prague lite up at night. It is beautiful. We found our hotel and walked to the old town square. It was very nice. We found a nice restaurant on the square and ate some amazing Czech food. I think it truly was good, not just because I didn’t have little people climbing all over me as I tried to eat.

Since we had been unable to see much of Prague our first day we spent the morning exploring. We went to the Prague castle, which is the largest castle in the world. We found that the castle had several churches in it which we explored. Then we went down the busiest street in all of Prague (you have to have tickets to get on the street). Below is a picture so you can see how “busy” it was when we got there, though by the time we left there was a line of people waiting to be allowed in the street.

We spent the last of our time in the Czech Republic shopping for crystal. First we had to find the village that was recommended to us by my brother-in law Todd who served a mission in the Czech. We were able to easily program the town into the GPS and we were on our way. We were told to turn down a small road, not thinking much of it since many roads in Europe are narrow, we headed on. Slowly the road changed from paved to used to be paved to a hard packed dirt road to two paths that you may see in a pasture to eventually no road at all. By the time the road had more or less disappeared it was to late to turn around due to the amount of mud. So we kept on driving and finally made it across a muddy field to the road that GPS was taking us (the whole time the GPS was telling us we were on the right road). I now know more how Satan works and how he can gradually lead you down a path that looks okay to a point where it appears there is no way out. We are glad that we found the end of the “road” and was able to make it to our destination. Where we were able to find very inexpensive crystal.
Is this a road?

After crystal shopping we head to Poland. Bright and early Friday morning we went to the German concentration camp Auschwitz. We went through on an unguided tour and read of all the horrible things that happened in the camp. Many of the images can be seen in pictures and other museums throughout the world, but it was different standing right where it happened, going inside the first gas chamber made, walking where thousands and thousands of innocent people where killed. I am glad that I had the experience to go and be reminded of where hatred, prejudice, and pride can lead us.

We ended our trip by heading to Boleslawiec and went Polish pottery shopping. We had fun looking at all the different patterns. However, neither Nicole nor I are big shoppers so we didn’t spend too long on this. We were done within an hour or two. We decided that instead of looking for more pieces we would leave first thing Saturday morning so we could return to our families earlier.

WOW! You are truly an explorer! You ending up in a pasture is much like Dad ending up in a similiar road near Nauvoo looking for one of his ancestors old home stead!

What an amazing experience to be able to visit Auschwitz. It must have been difficult. I wonder if visiting this area is like unto visiting the Oklahoma bombing sight. There is a hushed silence that resonantly mourns the loss of mass innocent lives. I am truly moved to hear you follow Nephi’s counsel.
